Being able to express one’s personal truth is essential to every human being. We need to express our opinions in a healthy manner in order to grow intellectually, become confident and gain independence. Speaking up in a healthy manner means one has consideration for those around him/her. It’s good to be assertive to one’s value. However, being assertive doesn’t mean being stubborn. Healthy self-expression is holistically transformative in that it emphasizes on one’s self love and acceptance as it’s all about communicating one’s individuality. Honesty is a skill that everyone should work on in order to align with their authentic self.
Oppression of one’s individuality can lead to the feeling of fear when it comes to sharing about one’s personal needs. It’s possible to re-learn how to speak up healthily without feeling regret or fear afterwards. It’s all about cognitive restructuring. We need to be capable of expressing our ideas clearly, honestly and be able to gracefully project one’s authentic creativity into the collective. If you have the urge to hide opinions and desires from others as well as yourself, find yourself gossiping constantly, difficulty listening to others or find yourself dominating conversations, then your intrapersonal state needs attention and reshaping.
In order to connect with our true selves, therapy is the best platform to externalize one’s internal monologue and get constructive feedback. Another way of connecting with one’s inner voice, would be mindful meditation. This will assist in quieting the mind. In this we connect with our inner selves and are able to spot what thoughts dominate our mind. These thoughts are often what steer our lives and determine the state of our self concept. With awareness, it’s easier to begin one’s journey towards developing healthy communication with others as well as the self.
